Hello Bry,
Don't have my KWM-1 manual handy right now, but I'm sure the info on
crystal type is in it (I looked it up and ordered the crystals for 12 and 17
meters some 20+ years ago). Yes, the crystal holder is a HC-6 style, just
like the S Line. The only glitch in putting the KWM-1 on 17 meters is the
fact that the VFO only covers 100 KHz per band segment (plus a few extra KHz
on either end of the band). This means that if U want to cover the whole
17 meter allocation in one tuning range (18.068 to 18.168 MHz) the readout
will be cumbersome. One solution would be to cover the "band" with two
crystals, and then U won't have to remember the "odd" KHz error (for example
18.0 to 18.1, and 18.1 to 18.2 MHz)........fortunately, you can easily do
this without giving up more existing "bands" by simply unplugging the
crystal holder and swapping out the two "new" crystals. The other way to
handle things is to order one crystal so that the radio will cover exactly
18.068 to 18.168 MHz with the VFO reading 0-100 as it does on the "stock" 3
bands........but then U will have to make a simple correction chart to track
the radio's actual frequency.
