I agree with Bill, that the Drake 2B with the Q multiplier is one great
receiver. Someone else mentioned an interest in getting it into some
SWL
frequencies. Two problems here, the first is the cost of crystals. Used
rocks are going for 10-20 each. It doesn't take much math to figure the
cost
of crystals could >than the cost of the receiver. Second problem is
there is
only space for only a couple of extras.

Hi Keith 'n' Everybody,
There are different ways to look at things like the cost of those
crystals. I'm sure that new crystals will cost even more. For some
people that is a problem and it was good that you pointed it out. For
others it's just a part of having a radio like that. The same issue
comes up with boat anchors and shipping. It can easily cost more to ship
a big ole transmitter than the transmitter is "worth". To some hams the
cost of shipping is "worth" it and the price actually paid for a radio
may or may not be it's "worth". People on tight budgets do have to pay
attention to those things. No matter the value of the hardware the
"worth" is not even debatable if it's out of a ham's reach. Ink jet
printers are almost free but the ink cartridges are awful. That doesn't
stop people buying them (I use a laser printer).
If I had that radio I would probably start buying a crystal or two here
and there and in time I would have a full set of them. A radio owner
might swap those extra crystals in and out as the 11 year sunspot cycle
advances. My own budget would allow to me play and acquire those
crystals but it would be easier for me on my "fixed income" to buy one
or two at a time. Even though my retirement has eroded with the economy
just like everybody else, I can still play with the radios.
I wish I could find a radio like that for ten bucks at the garage sales.
I stop and look at every garage sale I see!
73,
Bill KU8H
