Hi Glen and all:

Your statement is a valid question:

------------------------ Original message --------------------------

"Finally, why did RCA (and a number of the other tube manufacturers) keep on
making the earlier versions simultaneously with the later version if the
characteristics of the tubes were identical?"

The entire post by all has been interesting with the exception of the same
old boring gang that cannot control their sarcastic, narcissistic comments
e.g. "that’s over the top ".

There are methods to disagree that are constructive and intellectually
beneficial to all of us. The notion that anyone who uses a 6146* or for
that matter any recommendations from this or any other reflector blindly
following, without verification a suggestion, is simply without merit. If
one should choose to accept the advice and not verify the information, what
is the harm? So he used a 6146A rather than a 6146B and his equipment works
fine. He's happy that all is well until he reads the nasty comments on this
thread. Now he's looking for a design that will implement eight 807's or
twenty seven 6L6's or maybe tearing the kitchen microwave apart to scrounge
whatever tube that mysterious device used to deliver such power to a pork
chop.

The reason that I followed with interest is the history of the 8122 seems to
draw a parallel. Some amplifiers will work with any 8122 and others will
only work with about 3/4 of the production without modification, and others
cannot be made to operate properly with nearly 1 in 6 8122's. There is a
broad range of bias and neutralization attributes involved. Burle is the
only manufacturer that classified them with a four color code to enable
intelligent choice.

Kindest regards Jim K9AXN
