It does not sound like it has a pierce oscillator, which in classical form has the crystal connected between grid and plate.
I am not familiar with the Gross CP-100, but if it actually has a Pierce oscillator, then you cannot feed the VFO signal into the crystal socket. You would need to connect the VFO between grid and ground.
