The solution is SENSIBLE RECYCLING!
This goes for NiCd batteries also.
When we were tinplating PCBs in the 60's we had this problem. Putting a
varnish coating on the boards stopped it then. Then only the exposed areas
had a problem. Lead solder fixed that area.
