LEDs are definitely the way to go IF you can take the hit.  I bought  Juno 
Pro-LED under cabinet kitchen units that have a 50K hour guarantee.  They 
cost me a small bundle but really have as much light output as fluorescents  
or halogens and put out virtually no heat. You can hold your hand on the 
fixture  while it is in operation. The average 29" fixture operates on 8 watts. 
The only  problem I had with them is that several were different color 
temperatures from  the 3K Kelvin rating. The supplier exchanged them with no 
argument. They are  noise free and light instantly to full rated output. I love 
them.
