[Boatanchors] OT: Replace your batteries

Phil,

I have 13 smoke detectors! I just bought some of the 9 volt batteries from
Walmart at about $6 plus for two of them in a pack. I bought the rest from
Amazon.com (Eveready) for around $1.50 each in a pack of 18, I believe.
Seems like Sam's doesn't sell 9 volt batteries in their own brand. However,
I think Costco does sell their own brand at a good price, but they are too
far away from my QTH to make the trip worthwhile. What astonishes me is the
detector manufacturers tell you to replace the detector every 10 years. (I
know there is some radio active material in them). I also found they
sometimes will act up and give an alarm when the battery is OK or if the
battery is replaced. I found, sometimes blowing the thing out with a blast
of air from a compressor helps stop false alarms. (All my units are run off
of AC with battery back-up). Lets see, at around $20 each times 13, I need
to invest $260 every ten years for new detectors. Good news is they come
with new batteries if you do this!

Bet you never thought you would get a discussion going on your smoke
detector reminder!

Happy New Year.

Happy New Year and just a small reminder, New Year's is a good time to
put new batteries in your smoke detectors.
