The voltage reference in modern DMM's is based on quantum mechanical
principles. It's really hard for them to be off by much, even the
extremely cheap ones.
The old Heathkit rule of thumb was that a fresh carbon-zinc cell would
read something like 1.56 volts. Modern alkaline cells read a bit
higher. The Duracell I just took out of the package read 1.612 on my
trusty Fluke 77.
So check that your DMM isn't broken, and trust it to calibrate the
analog instrument.
