[Boatanchors] Advice Needed

Have him look at the new Kenwood TS-590. A very capable radio. Just
marginally inferior to the Elecraft K3, which is more costly when fully
loaded. Another alternative is a good used rig. Yesterday's top of
the line radios are very affordable (used, in excellent condition) when
they are no longer the "latest and greatest". Not a boat anchor to be
sure, but he wants something that works in today's world. Running the
"old iron" is a joy to be sure, but is perhaps not something for the
faint of heart - and nostalgia aside, there is no question that the
modern gear can run rings around the old stuff. .
