Unfortunately, the state taxing authorities don't hold eBay responsible.
Only the sellers. Texas charges Sales Tax on shipping between Texas sellers
and Texas buyers. For almost two years, eBay had a bug in their software
which caused their Checkout not to charge it. So we had to remit tax on two
years worth of shipping which we had not been able to collect. I reported
the problem to eBay several times and always got a "yeah, we know - we'll
eventually fix it" response. I called the Comptroller's office in Austin and
got "they aren't the seller, so we can't do anything".
As far as eBay goes, they already collect their final value fee on
shipping. They first tried to talk sellers into offering "free shipping" but raise
the price of the item to cover (so they could collect a fee on it). When
that didn't work, they announced that they were going to start collecting FVF
on shipping anyway. Greedy Socialist bastards. Sorry. That's triple
redundancy.
