Yep, 40M was terrible.  I tried to listen to the West Coast 40M swap net
(something I usually listen to every Saturday and Sunday).  Net Control
runs an amplifier and is usually around S9+20 or so.  Today at the
"pre-net" signal checks he was S2, and when I told him that, I was
surprised that he heard me OK (I run barefoot). . .
