Got a couple responses.

I reinstalled the knob so that there is almost no pressure on the spring in
the rest position, and that doesn't help.

I see the spring pushes against some kind of ring/clip (I don't know the
correct name of it,  it's one of those that's almost a complete toothed
circle but has an opening,  and you slip it over the shaft from the
side....).

Is that clip supposed to freely move?  I think it has to or else the spring
won't be effective.  Mine turns with the shaft,  but I'm not sure it will
move down the shaft.
