Assuming it's the R-9(A) circuit, I think they work pretty well for what 
the receiver is.  I like using mine with the T-90 and matching power 
supply, tuner, etc as it makes a nice looking station.  But I can see 
why the Elmacs and Gonsets were more well-received as a factory-made 
mobile setup as the H-W is much larger.    H-W made a version called the 
RG-9A that substituted general coverage for the ham bands, and I suspect 
this is an RCA-badged version of that.   But as far as I know, none of 
the H-W models had the internal speaker.

If you dig thru old QSTs from the late 50's you'll find that the R-9A 
was cleared-out at a price not much more than half the original $150 
selling price - I'd think it would have been a great  bargain at that 
price but you still don't see them very often.
