As I recall, in earlier ARRL handbooks, there was something about core size that related to overall power handling capability. Also, you could look up other transformers and look at ratings vs weight. But I like Paul's method.

  I don't know if I can find that watts / pound rule (I have it) but have 
  another technique which says that when the secondary voltage under load 
  drops 10 pct from no load that is the ccs current rating. Doesn't need to be 
  full voltage. I just put them on variac, raise the voltage to a safe level 
  and load it with resistor while watching the voltage. Ohms law does the 
  rest. Hasn't failed in 40 years. Determined experimentally with known 
  transformers.
