[Boatanchors] New speaker installed in National cabinet sounds great

  Hi All,
A couple weeks or so ago I started a couple threads about what speaker
(10 inch) to get to replace the badly damaged one in my National
Cabinet, to be used with my NC-183.

I finally settled on the Weber 10" Alnico as it seemed to be about the
closest thing to the original that is made today (and about half the
cost of the Jensen 10" Alnico one. At $45.00 (includes shipping from
Musician's Friend) it isn't cheap, but I feel it's worth it. To recone
the old one would be ~$40.00 plus shipping both ways and it was somewhat
rusty.

My only concern was that this speaker is sold as a replacement speaker
for Vintage Guitar amplifiers in the 10Watt or so class and I wasn't
sure how it would sound for voice and general radio use. As it turns
out, I had nothing to fear. It sounds very good. The sound is full,
but not boomy like a "woofer" would be, and while I can't measure the
response, seems to have sufficient treble to produce those 5KCs
heterodynes from adjacent shortwave stations well when the Xtal filter
isn't engaged ;-)

While I don't have a National factory speaker to compare it to, I would
say that this is a VERY good substitute for it and I'm happy with the
results. It fits well with no cabinet modifications, while a little
deeper than the original, it's not so deep that the "bell" protrudes
from the back of the cabinet. Speaking of the "Bell" in the picture it
looks like plastic, but it's actually a good solid metal one and the
speaker appears to be well made (it's American made). Electrically it's
also a very good match for those PP 6V6's in the NC-183.

You may see the speaker (and buy if you need to) here (I have no
financial interest in Musician's Friend). . .
