[Boatanchors] National one ninety receiver

Clive, the National NC-190 was my first short wave receiver bought new
from Lafayette catalog in 1964 while stationed at RAF Croughton,
England. It's a medium quality rig with pretty good performance typical
for radios in the middle '60's. It has a rather nice dual bandspread
dial that works with ham bands and the shortwave bands by simply pulling
out on the knob and rotating it 180 degrees. Like most receivers of the
time and in it's price range ($240.00) it falls off on the higher bands
a bit. I solved that by adding an Eico Nuvistor cascode preamp. Used
with an Evesdropper multi band dipole antenna I collected a -lot- of QSL
cards. Back then I couldn't begin to afford a Hammarlund HQ-180 but the
NC-190 was a lot better than most first receivers and even though I sold
it for college money I missed it so much that I later got another one
with the same preamp and antenna just for nostalgia.
It's not as fine as an NC-183D but I was thrilled with it and even put a
"Danger 30,000 ohms" sign on it to keep my idiot room mates from
fiddling with it. ;-)
There was a nice looking matching speaker available with a "flip foot"
just like the radio in the matching electric blue color. If you have
any more questions feel free to ask and I'll try to help.
