I didn't walk 30 miles through snow to and from school, and while we weren't poor, we were a long way from rich.  My dad was a shift worker at an oil refinery, my mom was a housewife.  I made money from mowing lawns, a paper route, and selling Christmas cards ( that surprisingly made a lot of money ) to fund my hobbies.  The yard chores around the house were part of being in the family.

I bought an HQ170 and Eico 723 used from the estate sale advertised in the big city newspaper.  It was for an SK who had a lot of gear to be disposed of.  I don't recall many ops in our area,  most were kids like me in other towns who I met on 40M.  The general who gave me my novice test worked with my dad.   I never even heard the term "elmer", certainly never had one.

After passing my General, bought a Viking Valiant from another estate sale.  Maybe the people selling just felt sorry for me, and sold the stuff cheap.  In a similar vein, when I go SK, my descendants will likely sell everything cheap in a garage/estate sale, folks like us are the only ones that think this stuff is worth much.
