Didn't work when I tried to use media mail for the 1950s magazines!  According to the people at the Post Office, advertising is advertising and there are no exceptions in the Postal Code.

I think a case could be made that images of 30 year old advertisements - most of which pertain to companies and products gone long ago, are merely representations of historical significance and not an inducement to purchase a product.
