The best tip I ever got to improve tip life for Weller
guns is one I learned probably at LEAST 40 years ago.

If you have a dual range gun, rewire the switch so that
fully pulled gives you the low range and the "half"
pull gets you the high temp range.
 
Your finger will always tend to pull the trigger to
the stop.
