I have three Weller guns, the oldest being purchased in the 50s. I also
tried copper wire. Been there, done that too. Real tips last a long time
and wire doesn't. I keep replacements in reserve around here. That takes
care of the infrequent tip changes when needed.

On another note, my General Cement solder station finallly used up it's
tip. I could not find a replacement. I even tried GC direct. This tought
me a lesson. I recently purchased a Weller WESD51 to replace the GC unit.
I will never again buy some wierd name soldering item. From now on it's
Weller only. They keep tips and heating elements for units they
manufactured years ago. I paid more for a Weller, but I learned the hard
way, they are worth it.
