[Boatanchors] Johnson Viking I questions

I think Carl is probably right about the 829B being Mod A; there is a sheet in the manual listing changes and operating conditions for this tube. Another possibility that could also be known as Mod A is the 250-21 TVI kit which looks like a real bear to install. I don't know if installing the clamp tube circuit from the Viking 2 was ever an official modification but one of my Viking 1 units has this circuit neatly installed.

I would follow Carl's advice on the caps, they are likely to be degraded and leakage won't necessarily show up until the operating voltage and normal heat are developed. There aren't many and they are cheap and easy to install. The oil filter cap is usually fine but may well contain PCB; unless it is spilling fluid I wouldn't be concerned. Definitely replace the small electrolytic caps in the B+ and bias supply along with the audio amp cathode bypass.

I hope you find the case, I like the appearance of my Viking I better than my II because of the case style. I have it paired with a SX-28 which makes a very vintage looking station. The Viking I, once problem caps are replaced, is a very reliable rig. The only unusual failure I experienced was nearly melting part of the wiring harness because a brand new pilot lamp from Mouser came with a shorted base. Fortunately I caught it before any damage was done.

Id replace any paper and electrolytic cap, the originals will go south
pretty fast after applied voltages accelerate the chemical action.

The PTT can be found in that Mod section you mentioned, or in the Viking II
in the CDC model.

Im guessing that Mod A is the 829B swap for the then unobtanium 4D32 during
the Korean War.

I use a I and II CDC regularly.
