In "Tube Lore" Sibley says (concerning sweep tubes):
"Many of these tubes went through "A", "B", etc variants. The
differences are usually trivial (sealing tip on the base, vs. on the
top), but occasionally significant (increased dissipation rating)."
Sibley does not identify an "A" variant for the 6DQ5 as he does for
the 6DQ6 where the 6DQ6A had an 18 W dissipation rating vs. 15W for
the non-A version. From this I would surmise that the 6DQ5A could be
safely substituted for the non-A version but maybe not (always) a good
idea the other way around.
