  If any of you are old enough to have an old vibrator (not the "sex 
toy" variety) in your junk box, pry off the socket end and remove the 
foam rubber insert from the can.  I have one of these and have used it 
for years.  It looks dorky, but works like a dream.  Same concept that 
my wife employs when she uses an piece of rubber tubing to wrap around a 
stubborn jar or bottle lid.  Another handy trick is to use the cap from 
a Uni-Ball or other "stick" pen as a pilot lamp extractor.  Just push it 
over the lamp and give it a twist.
