LOL my big mistake here was assuming that all the radio equipment was at the
radio op's position! I didn't think to look at the nav position.
All of the equipment is in the radio Ops position in the B-29 even though
the SCR-274-N is still operated from the flight deck. Different airplanes
have different arrangements dependent on where there was space and how it
would affect the weight and balance.
That poor radio op probably got quite the workout crawling back and forth
thru that tunnel in the event equipment needed adjustment in the forward
compartment.
Only on the ground when adjusting the equipment for the next mission or
replacing equipment that took battle damage.
In any event the pages visible in that link are for the C and D model, which
had the two turrets aft of the bomb bay and no waist gunner position. All
bets are off for the later versions which had one turret just forward of the
bomb bay.
Actually, Id think it would still be in the tunnel since the sides of it
are out of the way and not much else fits.
