I think many of the "alternate spellings" of ebay come from a perception 
from long ago that the very mention of ebay was verboten on the reflectors.

Dwayne laid this to rest a while back and I seem to remember that the 
gist of it was that you can't promote your listings but there's nothing 
wrong with writing the word, "ebay".

I have no quarrel with ebay, the galactic enterprise, and have found a 
number of things there that I would never have gotten if ebay didn't exist.

There, I've written, "ebay", five times now and if it's forbidden I 
guess I'm out of here.

I've also broken a self-imposed rule to not join one of these endless 
off-topic threads that seem to be the main meat of these reflectors 
these days.
