Finally got the Scout 680 working on CW after replacing bypass, filter, and oscillator feedback capacitors. The filter caps were open, two of the ceramic bypass caps were open, and the oscillator feedback caps were leaky. Rather surprising, hadn't expected so many to be problematic.
The oscillator caps tested correct value at low voltage but leaky, and replacing them with new NPO ceramics got the chirp out on 40M. The phone/cw switch is still fubar, the cathode electrolytic on the modulator is shorted, so someone disconnected the plate b+ on the modulator at the switch.
Made QSOs on 40M CW with crystal and VFO (Eico 722) control. Output about 50W. Next is trying to get "Heising" modulation to work, hope the "couplates" are still ok, have read where they are notorious for failing.
Not as complex as fixing an old receiver, but still fun for me.
