It precisely these sort of things that seem to crop up with no warning, 
that I keep a thread gauge and a couple of thread files - one for UNF, 
(Unified National Fine), and one for UNC, (Unified National Coarse), 
threads in my toolbox.

I've got thread chasers too.

You just never know when it be necessary to either measure the thread 
pitch or need to "reform" the "damaged" threads.  That is what the 
thread files and thread chasers are for.

They have saved my butt, along with a neighbor or two!
