I live about a mile from the University of Texas at Dallas campus. There
used to be one of those "do it yourself copy shops" in the area which had
high speed copy machines and the cost per copy was like 4 cents each. A
number of the students at UTD got the idea of purchasing a single textbook
at the college "book store" and then making multiple copies of the textbook
at the "copy shop". Then they would get a full refund from the book store
for the original. Many of these textbooks were in the well over $100 range
and the students would pay under $20 for the copies. The number of students
obtaining these copies ranged from a handful to several hundreds with the
sale of these textbooks by the college "book store" dropping to almost zero.

One day Federal Agents "showed up" at the "copy shop" with a court order
instructing the employees of the "copy shop" NOT to allow ANY copying of
copyrighted material without the express permission of the owner of the
copyright. Needless to say, the students who had been making copies of the
textbooks were not happy! But, their copying activities were basically
thwarted and the sales of textbooks at the college "book store" went back to
their "normal" level.

Good for the students! College books are overpriced rip offs anyway. It
gives the book companies less money to donate to socialist candidates and
activities. Colleges are known to be paid off to force students to buy new
"revisions" or books from another company. Meanwhile the old texts are
perfectly good.

I doubt if the Feds stopped anything except at that one place. There are
plenty of others and enterprising students can even have it done in their
home towns. Many copy shops will also provide a CD or other media if asked.

So please quit trying to find more sorry excuses to fuel the thread. Go
figure out how to fix something.

Specific excerpts can fall under the "fair use" provisions. But, copying
entire issues does not. You are allowed to make copies for "personal use"
(i.e. to "protect" the original from damage) but you cannot legally
distribute any of those copies to others.

It is perfectly legal to sell, give away, loan, etc., an ORIGINAL
copyrighted item. But, to distribute copies of items not in the public
domain is not legal.

Violating the Copyright Law of the United States of America is definitely
one of the more common violations of any laws. With the advent of the copy
machine and now the electronic scanner making and distributing copies of
copyrighted material is absurdly simple. However, the fact that it is very
easy to violate the law doesn't make it correct!

Giving away copies is no different than coming on here and asking if someone
can copy the schematic of a DX 100 and mail it to you. It fits under the
"fair use" exception to copyright laws.
