[Boatanchors] Mohawk Maurauder

S meter is another issue.

WA2PJP has a theory that the Mohawk was a rush job. Since the Apache
was basically an updated DX-100 and ready to go, Heathkit needed the
matching receiver ready by Christmas. So the Mohawk was sent out the
door without being thoroughly tested. Seems to make sense since the
defects in the Mohawk are pretty simple things that should've been
rectified before it hit the market.

I've worked Joe a number of times on 40 since he got his Heathkit
station online and it really sounds decent considering the 'Scratchy
Apache' moniker. Getting to operate the station last week with a
properly-working Mohawk was a real treat. He was able to address the
problems without the FET approach, using simple circuitry that keeps
with the age of the receiver. Mine is stock and is a horrid receiver
to listen to for any length of time. And the S-meter pegs, of course.

His next project is the Chippewa amp which will get the same treatment
as the other pieces. He does great work, and he actually uses the
stuff regularly.
