I can also add to the tale that even registered mail does disappear, or

Back in the early 90s, a work buddy and I ordered two identical
Gateway computer systems.  They were shipped as four boxes per
computer system.  My four boxes arrived, but only three for the other
computer.  Turned out the computer itself was never received.  After
a few days waiting to see if the wayward cow box would ever arrived,
my friend contacted Gateway, who agreed to ship another computer.

We never learned if the missing unit ever materialized.
