Bill
I have a Delta LA602 or LA603 (3 phase) lightening arrestor module installed
at all of my service entrance panels
Cost about $50 at the electric wholesale place. Simple to install and (knock
wood) haven't had a problem with line surges for years even though we
regularly get strikes very close to the properties
More sophisticated protection and units for phone and communications lines
are available from Innovative Technologies in FL. Good but pricey.
For feedline I have the Alpha Delta switch and disconnect if it is really
bad.
