Bill,

I'd try to estimate how much power it's going to dissipate, and back 
into the answer.  For instance:  500 volts (squared) divided by 500K 
ohms = 1/2 watt.  It's unlike that a half meg audio pot is ever going to 
be subjected to any significant power.
