[Boatanchors] 11 meter amps ? Re: [AMSWAP] FS: Panel Meters

Not really on topic of panel meters, but it flowed into this.

I operated 11 meters in 1957-58 somewhere there, just before they took it
away and assigned to Class D CB, some time in 1958. Made a few contacts into
New England, home brew then a DX-35 also.

I worked on, installed and built some of the earliest CB units used in my
area at the time. We had crystal controlled transmitters, usually one 1-4
channels and tunable receivers then. The Globe 100, RCA units and even the
kit form by Chickasha Electronics, (out of Oklahoma). I have several of the
old, early tube type units in my collection. Even Hallicrafters and a
Johnson.

Also have some early "real CB" units, Vocaline Class B units!

Had a contractor customer who tried to use the Chickasha units for
communications. Tunable receiver and NO squelch! We could get maybe 5-6
miles. Used 102" whips, even used some military surplus sectional antennas
to get a 1/4 wave.

A lot of early ham gear has the 11M position on it.

Biggest problem I see is the proliferation of "ham radio" units, sold by
many gray line distributors, 100-300 W transceivers, 10M Ham Sets they are
called, complete with "talk back" echo boards and "roger beep" circuits.
Most NO ham would buy. They are marketed in most major truck stops and by
many so called 'legitimate' distributors. Many, many shade tree dealers all
over the US sell them. Names like Ranger, Texas Star and even Cobra sell
high powered units, and the amplifiers are just as easy to get from many
sources.

Too bad the FCC did not clamp down when they had the chance, but was not in
the 'economic intrests' of many at the time when we had our recession back
in the early '80s.

Just my dos centavos,

Rod

cover 10 meters or that are advertised emphasizing that they can be
converted to operate on 10 meters. And the advertisements are NOT aimed at
hams but at CBers.

It's strictly illegal by the way to sell items of that sort to anybody
including hams

I was happy to see that one of the eBay merchants I reported to the FCC was
subsequently cited and fined by the FCC for that continuing action.

By the way, has anybody else who reads this list ever operated on 11 meters
AS A HAM LEGALLY?? I used to do cross band with Australia and New Zealand
in the 1950s when I was on 10/11 meter AM with a DX-35. Full duplex 11
meter to 10 meter. A lot of fun operating that way but with the prevalence
of SSB and VOX not that novel these days...
