RF Gain pots are often reverse log taper, an unusual taper indeed.
These can be hard to come by; salvage/parts unit is likely the best source.

If you are going to kluge in a pot of the wrong taper, linear will work better than audio in this application, but still not correctly.  I'm still mulling over an op amp plus linear taper pot solution to this problem.
