In some circuits a ground wire going between 2 tube pins and the center
provide a bit of input output isolation.

Gene,
That center post simply provides for a convenient point. Otherwise
another ground tie point would be needed.
The rivets for sockets are notorious for developing "issues" over time.
My $0.02, and worth every bit of it!
