In the original Ranger the B+ feed to the modulation transformer was 
switched via the mode switch, the arc being suppressed by a 
capacitor/resistor in series.  In later versions the B+ is continually 
applied and the arc suppression coeliminated.

I assume that the change was made to eliminate arcing on the switch contacts 
and possible burnout of the switch?  I noticed that my switch has begun to 
arc after I solid-stated the high B+ power supply and I am planning to 
modify the circuit as above.

I wonder why Johnson did not design originally to eliminate switching the 
B+?
