[Boatanchors] De-chirping a Globe Chief Deluxe?

I'm trying to set up a couple of operating stations for SKN including a
Globe Chief Deluxe / 75A3. Problem is, the Chief has a noticeable chirp.
I'm using good FT-243 xtals. Checked the PS and the filter cap seems to
still have its original value, and I'm using grid block keying as the
manual recommends.

I realize it's a low-end xmtr but there is a certain charm in
communicating with a flea market ugly duckling. Said charm does not
however extend to getting a notice from the FCC due to a bad signal.

Before I give up on it, I thought I would seek advice from this group.
Did these things chirp right out of the box? Any ideas (general or
specific) for cleaning it up? I thought about tossing together an
external oscillator with its own PS and running the Chief in VFO mode
but that's kind of like cheating. Guess alternatively I could provide
external power to the 6AG7 (and at the same time back down the plate and
screen voltages quite a bit). Or replace the 5U4 with diodes and use the
socket for an OD3?

Any thoughts?
