As much as some of us like tube gear I think you would have more success 
cloning the Heathkit HW-8 or HW-9.

  I think you could make a case for the HW-12, HW-22, and HW-32 monoband 
series.

The power supply would be easy to incorporate into the chassis, plus it 
would be universal to all of them, and they are easily assembled.

However, I'll echo the earlier post.  "It would have to be a labor of 
love.".  You'll not make anything to speak of.

Today's market is essentially "Appliance Operator" oriented.  Those that 
go after and pursue the Elecraft radios are few and far between.

Tremendous idea.

Otoh, I've been trying to wean myself from the kit mentality and go for 
DIY.  Being human, and therefore lazy, I always prefer the kit, as it's 
easy and complete.  But how does one expand ones horizons via only kits?

Interesting debate.
