Sounds familiar!
I was getting ready to depart from Naples IT in a C-130 for a flight to Olbia Airfield in Sardinia. Just before we cranked engines, a sailor ran up to the aircraft and tossed a package to the loadmaster and said "give this to Petty Officer X when you get to LaMad (LaMaddalana was a Navy sub base)".
Off we went and dutifully gave the package to Petty Officer X. PO X asked the loadsmasher if he wanted him to sign for the package. My clever LM said "Sure, what is in it"?. The petty officer, said "oh, about 2 million dollars for this weeks payroll".
He said they found that the less of a fuss, the less chance of someone figuring out that it was a valuable package!
Yep, we kept that receipt for a long time!

When I was flying for Flying Tigers in SE Asia we carried a lot of
Registered mail and as the Captain I had to sign for every bag by the
lock number at both ends and had to get a signed receipt from the next
person who took from me. we carried the cash for the payroll from Japan
to Saigon. I kept all of my receipts for several years as it turned out
one bag turned up missing between Clark AFB and DaNang I had my receipt
and the Captain that took it from me had a receipt from the guy in
DaNang. The postal inspectors bugged me from May of 67 until Feb. of 75
I showed them the receipts about every thee months one would show up
looking for the bag. They were not friendly either, My lawyer finally
told me to tell the next one to F**K Off or I would take them to court
for harassment.
End of story never heard from them again
