Something that might work to grip the tube if you use an arrangement like Dave Brown said, i have here one of those flexible rubber grippers that Mom used in the kitchen to help loosen up the screw on tops to jars. It's flimsy but not so thick that it couldn't be used in one of those metal tubes that has a slit in it. Probably need to go to a bit bigger size tubing though. Just cut it to the size you need, curl it up with glue on one side and run it inside the tubing. Might work and those rubber grippers should be available at about any kitchen ware place. Hmmm, have to give that a try myself. I've got a set of the woven wire ones but they don't push very well as another list member mentioned.
I've also got an aluminum with rubber insert type that was used by AT&T and i'm sure Ma Bell cause even into the 90's there was a lot of tube based carrier systems still in use. I think that maybe the rubber insert may have hardened a bit though so it doesn't get a good grip on the tubes when removing them. Works great for pushing them into sockets though.
I had a set of the "tong" type until my tool box was stolen about 10-13 years ago. Sure do miss them.
