The GPR-90 has a different "architecture" conversion-wise than the
Collins-type conversion receivers (first IF variable, after crystal
conversion, and fixed second IF). Stability and frequency readout
accuracy is better with the Collins-type receivers. The main down side
of most Collins receivers is the somewhat anemic and tinny-sounding
audio. The SP-600 and GPR-90 sound much better and less fatiguing.
Just an interesting fact is that the Russians made a series of
receivers starting in 1949, using the Collins system. I have an early
50's version (R-250M), all octal tubes and it's the best octal tubed
receiver I ever used!
Its performance is better than the Collins 51J4 - the audio is better as well.
It weighs about double the R-390 and it's larger...
I look at the GPR as a funkier looking SP-600 with band spread. From
comparing my SP-600 with my GPR-90 two side by side, they're about the
same, with the GPR-90 easier to tune on the ham bands. Interestingly,
I got my GSB-1 sideband/CW adaptor before the GPR-90 and I used it for
a while with the SP-600. I found the two receivers about equal in
performance even with the GSB-1.
