Short comment prompted by another response to this thread.

Generally (I know that there are exceptions), the common WW-II tactical 
sets (both ground and aircraft) tended to have audio output impedance of either 
around 250 ohms or around 4000 ohms nominal, or choice of either (but not 
both).  The common headsets and loudspeakers intended for use with them were 
typically 500/600 or 7000/8000 ohms.  Note that this allows for anywhere 
from one to four standard loads to be jacked into the system without exceeding 
a 2:1 mismatch.  I don't think I've ever seen it so stated in writing in 
vintage pubs but I've always assumed this was the thought behind the designs.
