[Boatanchors] Boatanchor Speakers

When faced with this issue, I generally use a PA type speaker together
with a companion wall-mount wooden enclosure. The speakers and
enclosures are readily available in the 8" size (10" or 12" are also
available) . Argos is one manufacturer. The sloping front enclosure
works well sitting atop a BA receiver, or it can or course be hung on a
nearby wall. PA speakers have good sound quality, some being available
with extra-compliant surrounds and even coaxial tweeters. The cost is
generally very reasonable, with a brand new speaker, enclosure box and
all usually coming in at less than $30. Add a "70 volt" multi-tapped
matching transformer if you need to match a 600-ohm or higher audio
output from the receiver. Now, here's the best part: Speaker,
enclosure, and even matching transformers are often available for free
from buildings that are being torn down or renovated. Since speakers
rarely wear out, a used unit is usually as good as a new one.

R-46), without its matching speaker or any other type. I have watched speaker prices go out of sight, especially on Ebay, over the years. I would really like to get a few more large size speakers to use on some of my old receivers (I don't mind using a National speaker with a Hammarlund receiver, etc) . I have used smaller size speakers, but they just sound tinny to me. Luckily, I accumulated a few over the years, but not enough for the pile. Do you all just bite the bullet and buy the speakers at the high prices... pick up anything you can find, whether it matches or not (which works ok for me)... or do you rig up a switching arrangement to switch different receivers to a particular speaker. If so, what kind of switching do you use as far as speaker loads, switching, etc. Any caveats which should be considered?
