His meters? They told him precisely how the choke (or anything!)
would react in the real world? Charts, tables and graphs are
invaluable design tools that give precisely the same information
without the need for a large shop full of useless equipment, plus
they're far closer first estimates of real world solutions. They're
close enough to be workable in 98% of the situations with that last 2%
left open for Murphy. Sole dependence on meters can't do that.
In the case of the original poster (and I can sympathize with his
plight at this point - "What happened to my topic?!?!?!?!?"), a simple
cheap LRC meter as acquired from the Bay Site and a number of other
shady sources would be a wonderful starting point. While I hope that
a ZM-11 will be in my future, I have a cheap pocket-sized LRC meter
and it's proven to be invaluable in determining the [first
approximation] values of unknown bitzenpieces.

I've found that the path to mental peace comes through blocking
individuals who disturb that peace. Like ones who blather uselessly.
BEst regards,
Michael, WH7HG ... who rarely blathers. On the other hand, I'm pretty
good at not making a lot of sense. ;-)
