Great stuff, Sandy - please share any other recollections you may have.  
The article did mention "having tried Henry RF power amplifiers without 
full success"  - so that explains what they were trying to do - running 
ham gear as AM linears for hours on end!  Also the CCA engineers had 
some real challenges maintaining a good match to that balun when 
switching frequencies.     By the way, the two engineers interviewed 
were Larry Thom and Chris Baum, if those names happen to ring a bell.
