[Boatanchors] Whither SWL'ing...?

I agree that it is disappointing to see the state of the SW bands these
days. I've been tooling around the bands on my newly refurbished SP-600 and
there's not nearly as much exciting to listen to as there was back in the old
days. (Of course, everything was new and exciting when you were 16). However,
I've found that many of the US broadcasters will provide air time to anyone
with a checkbook, not only the religious groups. So I've listened to
discussions of conspiracy theories, UFOs and alien interventions, offers of bullions
and freeze-dried food, and a variety of other causes. The other night this
was all trumped by the preacher who announced that he had carefully calculated
that the world would end in 2011. So enjoy those boatanchors while you can,
the end is near!
To keep on topic, there was one aspect of the SP-600 that drives me nuts.
The S-meter is affected by modulation on the signal, moving downward with
increasing modulation. I went crazy trying to set the meter calibration until I
noticed that the reading depended on whether the generator was modulated or
not. A 14 dB difference in reading. Once I figured that out, I used CW and
all is now good. Anyone know of a fix for this?
