I gladly paid the few bucks to join for a year. I've downloaded several
very good quality manuals.

At the risk of starting a fire, has there ever been a discussion about
that here and if so, consensus?

Does anyone on the list recall seeing an article on fabricating and
installing an S meter for the AR 88?. I had a copy but it got lost in our
last move.

Keith,
I don't recall seeing such an article, but as you know, origianal AR-88
S meters are scarce as hen's teeth. I fitted the meter movement from an
old SX-28 S meter into mine with, I think, very good results. The meter
works as you'd expect, and the yellowed backlit scale is a perfect
match for the AR-88 dial.
I honestly can't remember if I removed the meter case because it
wouldn't fit, because it was split (as many are), or just because it was
easier to mount this way.
I'm not advocating wholesale meter-robbery from great old SX-28s here
;-) - but they are somewhat more available. The same technique could be
applied using similar meters as well, I'm sure.

Hi Garey,
It has to be a time frame and model cost thing. My SX-115 has no, and
never had, Black Beauty caps. It's mainly ceramic disks and dipped
silver micas. There are some larger axial caps and I forget who
manufactured them, but they weren't Black Beauty in style. I've not had
to replace any caps in this receiver yet. Also, I did work on an
FPM-200 and it too was similar to the SX-115. So Halli did have their
good models.
The no costs bared FPM-200 used PTO's and any trimmer caps were very
high quality. So if you were willing to pay $2500.00 for a transceiver
in 1963 you got quality components, hi.
