In summary:

Unlike equipment designations such as ARA, ATA, SCR-274-N, the equipment
designation of "ARC" was never assigned/used.
 
The equipment system most people generically refer to as having the
designation ARC-5 actually has the designation AN/ARC-5.

When someone says "ARC-5" we know they mean "AN/ARC-5" but it isn't
technically accurate.

For some folks, and/or at some times, it is important to speak precisely
when discussing equipment.
