The magazine article I mentioned is in 
QST, April l998, pp 51-53 (Larry Johnson K5YF) - in his Note 2,  he
mentions a solid state replacement for the 1L6 via
www2gdl.net/padget/1l6.htm - I haven't checked to see if this website is
still active/valid.
