Not entirely accurate, but close. None were ever deployed, though some
were pulled for prepping and deployment. Stormin' Norman got the job
done sooner than expected. Same for the FRC-93/KWM-2A stations. IIRC,
Dennis Brothers had a bunch of these shipped to him to prep for
deployment with the same result. I think Davilyn in CA ended up with a
bunch of them. Recently opened one of the new CY-979A cabinets with
mil stamps on the wrapping from that time period. Some of the dates
were '89, which makes one wonder why a cabinet for an obsolete
receiver was being manufactured or even repacked then.

Biggest issue is that the sand there is more like a fine dust, not the
grains we're used to. It gets into places you'd not think possible,
and causes a lot of damage through abrasion as well as static and
clogging. Much of the mil field gear was well sealed and survived
fine, not so with some of the more delicate Harris systems. You gotta
wonder what that sand would've done to the gear train of the R-390A.
Then again, it wasn't likely meant to be a long-term solution.
